The City of Miramichi is a new dynamic city, which was formed through the amalgamation of five municipalities and several rural areas to form the new City of Miramichi in 1995.

Community Profile

The City of Miramichi is a new dynamic city, which was formed through the amalgamation of five municipalities and several rural areas to form the new City of Miramichi in 1995.
The population of the City is 17,811 (2011 Census), making it the fifth largest in the Province of New Brunswick.
Average age of the City’s population in 2006 was 43 years.
English is the dominant (80%) language of City residents; while 19% indicate knowledge of both English and French.
Within a 40 km (25 mile) radius of the City the population is approximately 41,000.

Building permit fees are $7.50/$1000 of new construction for commercial or industrial projects, among the lowest rates in the Maritime region.
Federal Payroll Centre of Expertise construction of an estimated 120,000 square foot complex is expected to begin in 2012.

Quality of Life

The City of Miramichi was named the world’s first Smart Technologies Showcase Community in 2010 for the communities innovative use of Smartboards in our schools, places of business and public sector. City offers approximately 22 kilometres of walking/hiking/biking trials, many along the beautiful Miramichi River, French Fort Cove a 500 plus acre multipurpose nature park located in the centre of the city, two indoor pools, two arenas, an 18 hole golf course, two marinas, numerous ball parks, soccer fields, tennis courts, curling club, fitness centres, libraries and museums.
State of the art regional hospital, opened in 1996.

The City serves as the gateway to world-renowned salmon fishing and hunting. A certified airport (YCH) with a 5900 ft runway, terminal and air-side facilities. Expansion plans for the runway will bring the certification to 10,000 feet allowing for air cargo opportunities. Home to NBCC – Miramichi, rated amongst the top locations in Canada to train in 3D game programming and animation.
Retirement Miramichi Inc. an active retirement community boasting a 95% continuous occupancy rate. Vibrant waterfront with Ritchie Wharf and Waterford Green Miramichi is known as the City of Festivals. Numerous heritage buildings and cultural resources.
