Population
 
  • The City of Miramichi is a new dynamic city, which was formed through the amalgamation of five municipalities and several rural areas to form the new City of Miramichi in 1995.
  • The population of the City is 18,129 (2006 Census), making it the fourth largest in the Province of New Brunswick.
  • Average age of the City’s population in 2006 was 43 years.
  • English is the dominant (80%) language of City residents; while 19% indicate knowledge of both English and French.
  • According to New Brunswick Regional profiles, prepared by the Department of Investment and Exports, the regional area of Miramichi (i.e., trade area) extends into Kent County; which represents a total population of 84,247. (1996 Census)
  • Within a 40 km (25 mile) radius of the City the population is approximately 41,000.
Municipal Tax Base and Rates
 
  • 2006 municipal tax base, $1,082,994,900 also the fifth largest amongst the cities in the province.
  • Municipal tax rate is the third lowest of the cities; at $1.5840/$100 for owner occupied residential; commercial and industrial rate is 1.5 times the residential rate.
  • The City of Miramichi offers among the lowest water and sewer utility rates in the province.

  • Dominant Industry Division of the City’s labour force is retail (15%), manufacturing (14%), health services (13%), government (9%) and education (8%). (1996 Census)
Construction and Investment
 
  • Since the City was formed in 1995, over $104,000,000 in new construction has occurred. Of this amount, 27% is attributed to new commercial development.
  • In 2000 and 2001 new construction within the City reach over $28,000,000, with 43% of that growth occurring in the commercial sector.
    Land development costs are very reasonable, with no development charges applied to new development.
  • Building permit fees are $6.00/$1000 of new construction for commercial or industrial projects, among the lowest rates in the Maritime region.
Quality of Life
 
  • Among the Cities in New Brunswick, Miramichi has the second highest per capita expenditure on recreation, leisure and culture ($156.56 per person in 2001)
  • City offers approximately 22 kilometres of walking/hiking/biking trials, many along the beautiful Miramichi River, French Fort Cove a 500 plus acre multipurpose nature park located in the centre of the city, two indoor pools, two arenas, an 18 hole golf course, two marinas, numerous ball parks, soccer fields, tennis courts, curling club, fitness centres, libraries and museums.
