Remembrance

Remembrance Miramichi Police Force actively endorses and participates in the “Remembrance” program. Each Canadian Police Officer that has had their life taken while in the line of duty will be remembered and honoured by all sworn members of the Miramichi Police Force.

Criteria
  • The deceased officer must have been a sworn peace officer in Canada and died as a result of an external influence.
  • The deceased officer must have been on duty at the time of death, or if off duty, acting in the capacity of a peace officer, or the circumstances leading to the death must have been brought about because of the officer's official status.
  • The deceased officer must have acted in good faith in doing everything that could have been reasonably expected.
  • Notwithstanding the above, any set of circumstances, which led to the death of an officer, may be considered.

Upon notification of the death, the Chief of Police or his designate will activate the Remembrance Protocol. Black elastic breast badge bands and armbands comprised of three colours will be worn. The black elastic breast badge band will be worn horizontally over the breast badge at center level. The shoulder band is to be worn on the left arm of the patrol jacket below the shoulder flash. Upon distributing the bands and armbands, the patrol Sergeant will coordinate the lowering of the flag to half mast. The ceremony will be open to all members. The bands will be worn for three days. At the close of the third day, the Chief or his designate will coordinate the raising of the flag to full mast. Again this ceremony will be open to all members. The Chief or his designate will then collect the bands and return them to their proper place of storage.

The colours of the band signify a period of mourning, remembrance, and pride for all fallen police officers.

Blue Represents the police profession and the dedication of all police officers.

Black Represents death and a period of mourning.

Grey Represents the steel badge and the immortality of service to law and order in the face of any challenge.
