Recruiting – Hiring competitions for career and part-time firefighter positions occur when any existing or anticipated position becomes vacant.
Shift Cycles – Career (full time) Position shifts are 24 hours followed by 72 hours off. Part-time members are called upon to cover shifts as required.
Qualifications – Candidates must possess a valid Class 3 driving license with air brake endorsement and have post-secondary education/training as a firefighter from a recognized community college or pre-employment school with the following certification: NFPA 472 HazMat Awareness and Operations, NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II, Auto Extrication, First Aid and CPR Level C with AED endorsement. Must not have any pending criminal convictions, or criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted. Driving abstract demonstrating responsible and safe driving behavior. Currently has and will maintain the agility and strength to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse condition as determined by the Candidates’ Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) or York Fitness Test. Ability to pass a medical examination. 20/30 corrected vision with color and peripheral vision acceptable for the position. Normal unaided hearing – hearing thresholds no greater than 30 decibels in each ear at 500Hz, 1000Hz, and 2000Hz and no significant loss in higher frequencies.
