Middle Island

Middle Island lies in the eastern extremities of the City of Miramichi. Visit the Interpretive Centre to learn the history of the Island, especially when it was used as a quarantine station for the many immigrants who survived their journey across the ocean, only to arrive in Canada critically ill from a contagious disease. Take a stroll on the walking trails and read the interpretive panels telling the tale of this small Island where, for many, joy at arrival in the new world turned to sorrow. See the Celtic Cross erected by the Canadian Irish Festival that stands in honor of the many immigrants who are buried there. A beautiful cedar hedge in the shape of a shamrock surrounds the cross. Have lunch at the Captain’s Galley Restaurant with a dining area overlooking the Mighty Miramichi River. Enjoy your picnic at one of the many picnic areas or simply relax and watch the river run by from the deck of the lighthouse or from a family bench. The Island is accessible via a short causeway off Lower Water St., located at 2345 Water St.Call 506-773-7505 or 506-773-6296.
