Hiring : Temporary 911 Dispatcher
In accordance with the Collective Agreement between CUPE Local 3863 and the City of Miramichi the following temporary vacancy is posted:
Position Title: Temporary 911 Dispatcher
Reports To: Deputy Chief of Police
Position Summary: A 911 dispatcher is a critical communications role, involving receiving emergency calls, assessing situations calmly, providing life-saving instructions, and dispatching police, fire, or ambulance services using radio and computer systems, requiring high stress tolerance, quick decision-making, and strong empathy for distressed callers, with a rigorous security clearance process and extensive training.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a High School Diploma and be capable of operating a computer for data entry and retrieval purposes at an average speed of 35 w.p.m.
Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Bilingual capacity Provincial Level Intermediate Plus (2+) is an asset, but not required.
Successful candidates must pass a security clearance/background check.
Responsibilities:
1. Responds to all calls and dispatches emergency vehicles, along with external services when necessary.
2. Collects and enters data according to established procedures.
3. Performs clerical and administrative duties as required by the department.
4. Assists in hands-on-training of new communication operators, as required.
5. Performs monitoring and feedback coverage for police, fire, ambulance and public works radio, as well as the paging systems for appropriate personnel.
6. Performs records system queries, police investigative file unit updates on an as needed or requested basis from authorized persons only.
7. Operates office equipment such as computer, fax machine, photocopier, E911 Telephone system, Video Security System, Intercom/Security, Elevators.
8. Use computer software such as word processing, spreadsheets and database necessary to carry out the required duties.
