Age Friendly Miramichi

The City of Miramichi received its designation as an Age Friendly Community in 2024, recognizing its commitment to supporting residents as they age and ensuring older adults can continue to live well, stay engaged, and feel valued in their community.

What is an Age-Friendly Community?

An age-friendly community is one that:

  • Encourages active aging

  • Optimizes opportunities for health, participation, and security to enhance quality of life as people age

  • Adapts its structures, services, and environments to be accessible and inclusive for older adults with varying needs and abilities

  • Recognizes and values the skills, experience, and contributions of seniors

  • Respects the decisions and lifestyle choices of older adults

  • Protects those who are most vulnerable

  • Recognizes the importance of including seniors in all aspects of community life

Age Friendly Steering Committee

As part of its Age Friendly designation, the City of Miramichi works with an Age Friendly Steering Committee focused on identifying priorities and advancing actions that improve the quality of life for seniors. Key areas of focus include communication and information, social participation, accessibility, and community support.

Senior Resource Guide

One of the initiatives underway is the development of a Senior Resource Guide for the Greater Miramichi region.

This guide will provide easy-to-find information on:

  • Programs and services

  • Clubs, groups, and social opportunities

  • Community events and activities

  • Supports available to seniors and their families

The Senior Resource Guide will be compiled and printed, and will also be available online through the City of Miramichi website, ensuring accessibility for residents and caregivers.
