Position Title: Firefighter
Reports To: Shift Officer or Designate
Position Summary: The City of Miramichi is now taking applications for multiple full and part-time firefighter positions and to create a one-year eligibility list. This role involves responding to fires, rescue situations, and other urgent incidents requiring rapid, effective, and safety‑focused action. Firefighters operate in high‑risk environments and must be prepared to make sound, independent decisions when immediate action is required.
In addition to emergency response duties, this position includes routine maintenance of fire department vehicles, equipment, and facilities to ensure operational readiness at all times. While firefighters are expected to exercise strong judgment in the field, performance is reviewed regularly by supervising officers to support professional growth and maintain the overall efficiency of the department.
Required Qualifications:
Completion of NFPA 1001 Firefighter Levels 1 & 2
NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator chapter 4 & 5 (Engine) an asset
NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator chapter 4 & 6 (Aerial) an asset
Grade 12 education certificate or equivalent
Ability to understand and communicate clearly in English (oral and written)
Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certificates
NB Class 3E(air brakes)
Process:
Candidates will be required to successfully complete the following during the employment competition
Written exam based on firefighting theory and tactics
Practical skills assessment
Complete medical including vision and hearing tests
Physical assessment equivalent to the York test within past 6 months (if candidates do not provide a York test or equivalent with their application, physical fitness testing will be provided in Miramichi which will include VO2 Max)

Responsibilities:
Responds to emergency calls, lays and connects hose, holds nozzles and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, uses extinguishers and other equipment.
Provides search and rescue in various forms.
Drives and operates firefighting and emergency equipment as assigned.
Provides first responder actions to hazardous materials calls.
Conducts fire prevention inspections and public education programs as assigned.
Completes incident reports and maintains vital incident information for investigative and record keeping purposes.
Attends on duty training sessions and off-site training courses as necessary.
Maintains equipment in good repair in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
Ventilates buildings to release heat, smoke and gases and places salvage covers to prevent water damage.
Receives and records telephone fire alarms and other emergency calls and assists in dispatching proper apparatus and equipment.
When assigned to Fire Prevention work, under the direction of an officer, performs inspections and clerical duties as required.
Performs related duties as assigned.

The City of Miramichi offers a competitive compensation and benefits package in accordance with the collective agreement between the City of Miramichi and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 5087.
