City Council Highlights for August 19th Regular Council Meeting

At the Regular Council Meeting held on Tuesday, August 19th, City Council approved a motion to extend the time for compliance to Sunfield Property, the owners of the building at 77 Chatham Avenue, the former St. Andrew’s School to December 31, 2025.
The owners had appealed a June 30th, 2025 Notice to Comply for the unsightly and dangerous condition of the structure by demolishing or repairing the building.
Council requested monthly updates on the progress of the project.

City Council approved a motion to allocate $340,000 in the 2026 General Capital budget to replace the sports field lighting system at lronmen Field, as per Management Report CWR-2025-012. The motion also authorized the Mayor and Clerk to execute funding agreements with ACOA, RDC and NB Power to the lronmen Field Project as required.

City Council did not pass a motion to amend the size of Lot 2024-1 of PID#40550899 by five metres as requested by the developer, Janata Builders. The motion was defeated by a vote of 4 to 3.

City Council awarded Tender 25-011 - Former Ken's Trailer Park Stormwater Upgrades Phase 2 to North Shore Construction Ltd. for $591, 991.25. The work will include ditching, installation of culverts and stormwater main on Lakeside Drive and Marcan Drive in the former Kerr’s Trailer Park. The work includes the removal and disposal of existing culverts and restoration work associated.

City Council approved a motion to implement a Cadet Sponsorship Program and and grant signing authority to the Mayor and Clerk to execute sponsorship agreements in future years, subject to budget availability and program performance.
The program represents a strategic, cost-effective solution to address the City's recruitment challenges and ensure a sustainable pipeline of qualified parttime police officers.
This initiative will cover full tuition and fees for selected cadets attending the Atlantic Police Academy and require a two-year return-of-service commitment as pat-time probationary constables.
A rigorous, multi-stage selection process will be overseen by a dedicated Cadet Sponsorship Committee. Applicants must meet eligibility criteria and pass assessments including aptitude testing, background checks, interviews, and physical and psychological evaluations.

City Council approved the second and third readings to amend By-law No. 110-47, a By-law to Amend By-law No. 110 for the rezoning of a property located at Williston Drive and McKinnon Road from Residential Low Density (R-2) to "Mobile Home/Mini-Home (RM)" to permit the development of a mini-home subdivision.
