City of Miramichi Council Directs Further Review of Proposed Data Centre Zoning Amendment
MIRAMICHI, NB — The Mayor and Council of the City of Miramichi wish to advise the public that, at its Council-in-Committee meeting held last evening, Council passed a motion directing further review and consultation regarding a proposed amendment to the City's Zoning By-law that would permit data centres within the Heavy Industrial (HI) Zone.
Council has given first reading to the proposed by-law amendment. However, Council wishes to provide additional opportunity for review and input before proceeding further with the statutory by-law amendment process.
Under the motion, Council directed staff to:
Consult with all members of Council to collect and compile feedback respecting the proposed by-law amendment;
Refer the proposed by-law amendment, together with Council's feedback, to the Planning Review Advisory Committee (PRAC) for its consideration and recommendation regarding any amendments that may be recommended;
Obtain third-party expert advice on the topic; and
Seek relevant consultation from the Provincial and Federal Governments.
As a result of this additional review process, Council also directed staff to cancel the public hearing currently scheduled for August 4, 2026, regarding the proposed by-law amendment.
If required, a new public hearing will be scheduled following Council's consideration of the recommendations received from PRAC and the completion of the additional review and consultation process.
The City will provide further information to the public as the process progresses
