Miramichi is New Brunswick’s Most Active Community!
Miramichi wins funds after residents and organizations got active throughout June during the 2026 ParticipACTION Community Challenge presented by Novo Nordisk
July 22, 2026 – The seventh edition of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, a national physical activity and sport initiative that encourages everyone to get active throughout June, ended with Miramichi earning the title of New Brunswick’s Most Active Community and winning funds to support local physical activity and sport initiatives.
“New Brunswick’s most active community. That’s the title Miramichi just earned, and it didn’t happen by accident. ‘Moving with the Mayor’ started as a simple idea: get outside and walk together every Saturday in June. Miramichiers showed up rain or shine, at French Fort Cove, Strawberry Marsh, Waterford Green and Middle Island Irish Historical Park. They brought their kids, their neighbours, and their walking shoes. Community leadership and local organizations took the challenge to heart too, from leading free classes all month to community wide activities for all ages. Being named ParticipACTION’s Most Active Community in New Brunswick belongs to every one of them. Our trails are beautiful, but it’s our people who made this happen. This recognition belongs to everyone who participated, and we plan to keep moving.”
The City of Miramichi partnered with the Mango Program, Greater Miramichi Service Commission, Physical Literacy 4 Communities Miramichi, and Anglophone School District North to offer free physical activity, recreation, and sport opportunities throughout June.
Community participation was outstanding, with 35 organizations and 23 active groups registering events for the Community Challenge. Together, they delivered a variety of activities for all ages and abilities, including walking programs, fitness classes, sport clinics, recreational events, and family activities.
Throughout the month, residents recorded 64,925 participation instances, highlighting Miramichi's strong commitment to active living and reflecting a collaborative effort among municipalities, schools, organizations, businesses, and volunteers to promote accessible physical activity opportunities across the region.
The 10 000$ in funding awarded through the ParticipACTION Community Challenge will help support physical activity and recreation initiatives, ensuring residents continue to have opportunities to live active, healthy lifestyles
