Natoaganeg First Nation — The City of Miramichi is proud to announce the donation of five surplus kayaks and one surplus canoe to Natoaganeg First Nation and Gitpo Spirit Lodge, reinforcing a shared commitment to community partnership, outdoor recreation, and cultural connection.

The donation will support cultural healing, recreational programming and provide additional opportunities for community members and visitors to experience the waterways and natural beauty of the region. The equipment will be used to enhance outdoor activities that encourage wellness, learning, and meaningful connections to the land and water.

"This donation reflects the strength of our relationship and our commitment to working together to create opportunities that benefit our communities," said Mayor Veronique Arsenault. "We are pleased these kayaks and canoe will continue to serve a meaningful purpose through the programs and experiences offered by Natoaganeg First Nation and Gitpo Spirit Lodge."

Representatives from Natoaganeg First Nation expressed their appreciation for the City's generosity and the spirit of collaboration behind the donation.

"We are grateful for this contribution and the partnership it represents," said Chief George Ginnish. "These kayaks and canoe will help expand recreational and cultural experiences for our community and guests while strengthening connections to our traditional waterways."

“Gitpo Spirit Lodge is thrilled to receive this donation from the City of Miramichi. This falls in line with one of the objectives of Natoaganeg’s Men’s Mental Wellness Group, said Galen Augustine, Manager of Operations for Gitpo Spirit Lodge. “Our culture embraces the healing properties of the river. To combine physical wellness and mental health, while keeping the history of our river alive through teachings, is sacred to our people. The fact that the City of Miramichi understands and values this concept, is strong proof of their efforts to continuous relationship building with their Indigenous neighbors in Natoaganeg.”

The City of Miramichi, Natoaganeg First Nation, and Gitpo Spirit Lodge remain committed to fostering positive relationships that support healthy, vibrant communities and celebrate the region's shared natural and cultural heritage.
