Coins recognize city’s 30th anniversary, 200th commemoration of Great Miramichi Fire
Commemorative coins recognize the City of Miramichi’s 30th anniversary and the 200th commemoration of the Great Miramichi Fire.
At the Regular Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 20th, 2025, Mayor Adam Lordon and City Council were presented with limited edition collector coins commemorating the City’s 30th Anniversary and the 200th Commemoration of the Great Miramichi Fire.
Mayor Lordon accepted a plaque from Economic Development and Tourism Director Jeff MacTavish, featuring the coins to commemorate the occasion. One side of the coin features a logo designed for 30th Anniversary. The other side of the coin features a drawing created by Indigenous artist, Pauline Young for the 200th Commemoration of the Great Miramichi Fire.
Young’s drawing features the Rankin House and captures the story of Alexander Rankin who provided shelter to the Indigenous people of the area, particularly to the Natoaganeg First Nation during the fire. The story is featured on a storyboard at Rankin Park.
In honour of that story, Mayor Lordon presented commemorative plaques and coins to Young for creating the image and to Natoaganeg Chief George Ginnish. A coin was presented to Natoaganeg Councillor Tyler Patles.
Young presented Mayor Lordon with a print of the drawing along with the traditional story.
Economic Development Officer Paul McGraw advised City Council there would be Canada Day Drone Show Spectacular featuring a drone light show and a fireworks display on Tuesday, July 1st, 2025 at the Miramichi Airport. The gates will open at 7:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 10:30 p.m.
