Senator Richards Unveils Canadian Literary Trail Plaque in Miramichi
Senator David Adams Richards was joined by family, friends, community members and visitors and more to unveil the first Canadian Literary Trail Bookmark plaque in New Brunswick.
It is the 30th Bookmark installed by Project Bookmark Canada. The bilingual plaques recognize Senator David Adams Richards and his acclaimed novel The Friends of Meager Fortune.
Mayor Adam Lordon assisted Richards and unveiling the English plaque and the two were joined by Richards’ sister, Mary Jane Richards and her husband, Jeffrey Carleton to unveil the French plaque.
Prior to the unveiling event, held Friday, July 18th, 2025, Richards read the excerpt that appears on the English plaque and Mary Jane Richards read it in French. Congratulatory messages from other authors with Bookmarks were read by Sandra Bunting. A congratulatory message from Douglas Gibson, Richards’ longtime editor and former president of McClelland & Stewart who nominated him for the Bookmark was read by Carleton.
Hughena Matheson, President, Board of Directors, Project Bookmark Canada emceed the event. Miramichi Bay- Neguac MLA Sam Johnston offered a congratulatory message to Richards.
Thomas Daley and Shawn McCarthy of Character Matters performed skits and songs related to the lumbering days on the Miramchi.
The Bookmarks are located at the Harkins Memorial Park Hub, located off of Newcastle Boulevard.
