MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The government is providing the City of Miramichi with $1.8 million to update infrastructure and enable two housing developments.
“Updating infrastructure is an important part of creating more housing,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “This funding to upgrade aging infrastructure means that Miramichi will be able to encourage future developments in the area without issue, and provide safe, affordable housing for residents.”
About one kilometre of water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure in the city’s east end will be replaced and upsized.
There are plans for a 24-unit housing development on John Street while a 38-unit apartment building and three duplexes are proposed for Howard Street.
“The Chatham Non Profit Housing Inc. board of directors wants to thank the Regional Development Corporation and the City of Miramichi for working with us on these key housing developments,” said Blair Martin, president of Belleterre Community Partners and developer with Chatham Non Profit Housing. “This new infrastructure comes at a time when our board has made the decision to grow the corporation's existing portfolio of affordable rental housing in Miramichi.”
Funding is being provided through the Regional Development Corporation’s Preconstruction and Infrastructure Fund to Support Housing.
“Creating the additional housing we need in the community is a top priority for city council,” said Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordon. “Working in partnership with the province and developers such as Chatham Non Profit Housing Inc. is helping us to achieve that goal. We know the work will be ongoing for a while, but investments like this are moving the needle and are a key part of that work.”
