The City of Miramichi is providing an update regarding the Lord Beaverbrook Arena (LBA) and its future operations.
The City has previously shared that it will continue to operate the LBA until the opening of the ARBEC Wellness Centre, a commitment that remains unchanged.
As part of the established transition plan, and a requirement of our contractual funding obligations with the provincial and federal governments, following the opening of the new facility the City will no longer operate the LBA. The ARBEC Wellness Centre represents a significant investment in Miramichi’s recreational future and is expected to expand opportunities for sport, health and wellness programming, while also supporting tourism, economic development, and the attraction of regional events and visitors.
The City recognizes the strong connection many residents have to the LBA. For generations, it has been a place where the community came together, known for its important role in local sport and recreation. It has supported athletes, families, volunteers, and fans, and has been home to countless games, events, tournaments, and shared moments that are part of Miramichi’s history.
Through a review of historical records, the City has confirmed that the property deed for the LBA was transferred in trust over time from the Roman Catholic Bishop of Saint John, to the Chatham Rink Association, to the Town of Chatham, and ultimately to the City of Miramichi. Because of this history, the LBA is not fully owned and controlled by the City in the same way as other municipal facilities.
Given this ownership structure, the City will begin discussions with the Chatham Rink Association members and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Saint John to develop a transition plan following the opening of the ARBEC Wellness Centre. These discussions will focus on clarifying ownership, responsibilities, and the appropriate steps to support a transition of the property.
Ultimately, decisions regarding the future of the LBA once City operations cease will rest with the legal owners of the facility.
The City of Miramichi remains committed to a respectful and collaborative transition process that honours the legacy of the LBA while supporting the continued growth and evolution of recreation in our community.
