City of Miramichi Closes Chatham Property Over Safety Concerns
MIRAMICHI, NB, July 17, 2026 — The City of Miramichi wishes to advise that the Miramichi Fire Department has taken action to protect the safety of residents and the community by closing a residential property in Chatham. The safety of our residents remains a top priority, and we understand the impact this closure has on those affected.
The City has engaged with multiple partners at the provincial and municipal levels to ensure residents of the property have a temporary safe place to stay. The Canadian Red Cross will be on site to support residents, along with other organizations.
"Our hearts are with everyone who has been displaced during this difficult time. We know this has been an incredibly stressful experience for residents, and I want to assure them that the City is working closely with our partners to make sure they have access to the supports and resources they need. Our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone affected." said Véronique Arsenault, Mayor of Miramichi.
At this time, we do not have a firm timeline for when the property will reopen. Safety remains our top priority as we work through this process.
We recognize this is a difficult situation for the residents who have been displaced. City staff are working with partner agencies to make sure support services are available throughout this transition.
